Krista’s Background

I was born in Hibbing and have lived here all my life, so I understand the unique challenges that can affect people on Minnesota’s Iron Range.  I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Practitioner. I have my Masters in Nursing with an emphasis on psychiatry from The College of St. Scholastica. Prior to that I obtained my undergrad at St. Scholastica and my Associate in Science and Arts as well as Nursing degree from Hibbing Community College.

What Krista Can Treat

As a a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I am trained and licensed to assess, diagnose and treat the needs of patients who have mental health disorders or substance abuse problems. I can provide therapy, prescribe psychotropic and addiction medications, and also certify patients for inclusion in Minnesota’s Medical Cannabis program.

Krista’s Approach & Philosophy

My focus is to help people enjoy life and thrive here on the Iron Range and beyond. I care about each individual and their needs, and I believe that each unique patient benefits from a personal approach to their care. I enjoy being outside when the weather is nice- kayaking, hiking, going for walks or just relaxing by a fire. I also like to travel, seeing different places and meeting new people, which lends to an appreciation and deeper understanding of myself and how I can use that to help others.

What Darla Can Treat

I am able to see clients ages 5 and up for a variety of mental health symptoms and disorders. I specialize in trauma-informed care, which places an emphasis on how traumatic events, both in childhood and adulthood affect our brains, thoughts and behaviors. I also have experience in helping those with co-occurring disorders, or substance use coupled with other mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression and PTSD. My years as a social worker also afforded me the ability to work with those who are dealing with grief, loss and shame.

Darla’s Background

From a young age, I knew that being in the helping profession, in one aspect or another, was something I had a great passion for. In the beginning of my education, I worked with people who have developmental disabilities. After completion of my bachelor’s degree in psychology, I went on to work at a crisis and stabilization unit and then as a social worker for almost 7 years. I have worked in a private practice setting, providing 1:1 and family therapy ever since the completion of my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. I also have plans to do some group therapy, likely including art, in the future.

As for my life outside of this passion, I enjoy writing, bead work, painting and spending time with my family. I also enjoy collecting rocks and agates, making forts with my kids and geocaching.

Darla’s Focus

My focus in therapy mainly comes from a trauma-informed and person-centered perspective. I believe in meeting each person where they are, knowing that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to treating mental health. I strive to offer those I serve unconditional, positive regard and authenticity, as I believe these are the most important ingredients in a helping relationship. I see those I serve as fellow travelers, and although I may have expertise in mental health, I am always learning things from people who have varying interests, expertise and passions; this is one of the greatest gifts I receive in my work. My ultimate goal is to help people become the best version of themselves— however that version looks to the client.

Practice Philosophy

I am amazed at how resilient most people are in the face of trauma, grief/loss, stress and other challenges brought on by life’s circumstances. I believe that each person already has the strength within themselves to move forward toward healing. I work to understand their experiences and work alongside them on that journey. I want to the know ways in which they have learned to cope and offer assistance in a nonjudgmental, safe, and supportive setting. I always consider my client’s culture, ethnic and socio-economic background. I respect the uniqueness of each individual and believe a genuine, empathetic therapeutic relationship is needed for growth and healing..

Areas of Expertise

I use evidence-based techniques to maximize the beneficial outcomes for each client. As an older therapist, I have life experiences that can help clients to feel valued and understood, thus allowing them to feel comfortable enough to explore their feelings, wounds, and longings.  I help adults with Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Stress, Grief/Loss, and Serious and Persistent Mental Disorders. `

Madi Alaspa

Counselor

Madi's Approach & Philosophy

Mental health care has always been prominent in my life. I grew up in a household with both parents working in the field in some dimension but, beyond their knowledge, they instilled in me that the desire to help others is of the utmost importance in this career and in life. Having surmounted intense battles with my own mental health in the past, my biggest goal is to help others do the same. I hope to guide people towards the light at the end of the tunnel and help everyone to see the capacity within themselves to overcome the challenges of their own mind. I am here to help you heal the parts that medications cannot as part of a team with quality treatment in mind. Whatever you are facing, I aim to use my skills and knowledge to comfort and guide you on your healing journey.
